We Improve Content Marketing Outcomes While You Improve Patients’ Lives
Greetings. I’m Heather Johnson. I launched OutWord Bound Communications in 1999. I help B2B companies—primarily in drug development, medical device/medtech, and healthcare technology—plan and develop technical and/or scientific content. I advise on and deliver high-quality content and copy that not only builds brand awareness and trust, but drives profitable action.

I Get MedTech.
I’ve been turning complex, technical topics into engaging content for over 20 years. I have focused by business on medical device, life sciences, eClinical, and select healthcare technology since 2016.
I have created content related to surgical robotics, neural interfaces, artificial intelligence and machine learning, SaMD, wearable devices, surgical stents and sealants, and so much more. I’ve written about EU MDR and IVDR, quality management, and AAMI/UL standards. I’ve written about plastic bags and ball bearings. The list goes on.
My clients include global CROs and CDMOs, pharma/biopharma consulting firms, digital health and SaaS start-ups, huge medical supply companies, clinical technology companies, a central laboratory, and many more in drug development, medical device, and digital health/DTx. Therapeutic area expertise includes neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, and oncology.
What does this mean for you? I know how to speak to your target audience. As a specialist, I have the expertise to develop thoughtful analysis backed by credible research. I deliver fresh ideas for frazzled teams. And because I’ve been in business for a long time, I need little oversight.
A Consultative Approach
Would you rather have a typist or a partner? Many good writers can follow a brief and provide a well-written deliverable. I go a few steps further, offering fresh ideas to maximize the value of your content.
What does this mean for you? When you work with me, you get more than a scribe. You get a writer that brings clarity, direction, perspective, and confidence to your content marketing efforts.
An Athlete Mindset
In my other life, I’m a long-distance runner and cyclist. All those hours training and racing honed by ability to set and achieve goals and follow through on my commitments.
What does this mean for you? I do what I say. I know the value of teamwork and can work solo for hours on end. I help you create clear content goals, evaluate opportunities for improvement, and find gaps where you can slip in and surge ahead. And I spend a lot of time in motion brainstorming things like headlines and content strategy.
Empathy and Objectivity
Ten-plus years in journalism helped me develop solid writing skills and the ability to think objectively. When I put on my copywriter hat, that’s when my high degree of empathy comes in. I get into the heads of your audience to address their needs and “pain points.”
What does this mean for you? I know what editors look for in bylined articles, and I know my way around PubMed. And whether you need a copy platform and website copy or a Q3 content roadmap, drafts will be on time or early. I do my best to get it right from the start, which saves you precious time.
I volunteer with CatTown, a nonprofit that helps Oakland’s most vulnerable shelter cats. When I work from home, my own rescue kitty, Geoff, is usually sleeping beside me. He makes frequent appearances on video calls, just so you know.
