About Us
Strategic Content & Messaging for MedTech & Life Sciences
Greetings. I’m Heather R. Johnson, the content strategist, writer, and editorial partner behind OutWord Bound. I’m based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and work with clients all over the U.S. and worldwide.
Senior marketing leaders at medtech and life sciences companies turn to me when they want to tell complex value stories clearly, stand out in crowded markets, and do it all within regulatory and resource constraints.
Those objectives require a stable narrative—one that helps buyers understand your value, supports sales conversations, and holds up under scrutiny.
A strategic thought partner
OutWord Bound provides practical, data-driven content strategy and evidence-based storytelling for companies with technically and scientifically complex products and services. I plan, shape, and develop long-form content that translates your expertise into language buyers can use.
I serve as your primary strategist and point of contact. When scope requires, I draw from a carefully curated network of specialists—delivering senior-level expertise without the overhead or complexity of a traditional agency.
The result is content that’s clear, credible, and purposeful—from foundational messaging through to execution.
Why partner with OWB?

I Get MedTech.
I’ve been translating complex technical topics into clear, engaging content since 1999. That experience gives me the judgment to navigate (and write about) medical device and life sciences marketing realities.
Clients include global CROs and CDMOs, medical device manufacturers and development firms, and healthcare and clinical SaaS companies. They come to me when need content that’s accurate, properly supported by evidence, and engaging.
What does this mean for you? I speak your language. I understand your constraints, and I know how to communicate scientific, medical, and business value without oversimplifying or overexplaining.
A Consultative Approach
When you work with me, you get more than polished copy. You get a partner who thinks about messaging, structure, and evidence before a single word goes on the page.
I combine audience insight, market context, and content strategy to make sure what you’re producing supports your business goals—no content for the content’s sake.
What does this mean for you? Confidence your content aligns with business objectives. A partner that can help you plan around the bigger picture.
An Athlete Mindset
In my other life, I’m a long-distance runner and cyclist. All those hours training and racing honed my ability to set and achieve goals and follow through on my commitments.
What does this mean for you? I know the value of teamwork. I have the focus to follow through on large projects. I help you establish clear goals and then meet (or beat!) them. And I spend a lot of time in motion brainstorming things like headlines and strategy.
Empathy and Objectivity
Fifteen years in journalism shaped how I think about clarity, objectivity, and audience. That background informs much of what I do—from bylined thought leadership to executive summaries.
With experience and a high degree of empathy, I understand how editors, SMEs, and your customers think, and where messaging might fall flat.
What this mean for you: strong drafts, fewer revision cycles, and content that’s clear, confident, and correct—without question.
What Else?

I volunteer with CatTown, a nonprofit that helps Oakland’s most vulnerable shelter cats. When I work from home, there’s usually a rescue kitty napping near by. Maybe you’ll get to meet them.
